Lost Teeth Could Grow Back: Scientists Are Working Toward It
Scientists are investigating regenerative dentistry as an alternative to fillings, implants and other temporary solutions for damaged or missing teeth. Research teams are using proteins, stem cells, organoids and biomaterials to encourage the growth of dentin and enamel or create whole teeth in the laboratory. Experiments involving human cells, mice and miniature pigs have produced promising early results, but treatments for people remain years away because they require further animal testing, funding and methods for safely integrating engineered teeth into the mouth. The research could also advance broader efforts to regenerate bones and other organs.
