Pakistan-administered Kashmir: Why have so many died in the run-up to this election?
At least 40 people, including 34 protesters and six police or paramilitary personnel, have been killed ahead of legislative elections in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The unrest stems from opposition by the Joint Awami Action Committee to 12 assembly seats reserved for refugees from Indian-administered Kashmir, which activists say undermines local representation. Authorities banned JAAC under anti-terrorism laws and launched a crackdown, while violence and intimidation have forced candidates to limit campaigning. The elections are scheduled to begin in stages on 27 July, though critics question their credibility amid fear, restricted communications and ongoing unrest. The UN has called for impartial investigations into the deaths and raised concerns about restrictions on protest and association; opposition leader Bilawal Bhutto has urged a truth and reconciliation commission.
