Dog received such severe beatings he died after being seized from cruel owner
Jordan Wood was jailed for 18 months and banned from keeping animals for life after pleading guilty to abusing a Labrador-cross named Chance and a cat named Casper. Veterinary examinations found both animals had suffered repeated, severe blunt-force trauma, including fractures, strangulation-related injuries and internal damage. Chance was seized after a vet raised concerns and was later euthanised because of complications, while Casper died from chest trauma, lung collapse and respiratory failure. Ellen Gibson also pleaded guilty to allowing the abuse and failing to obtain veterinary care, with sentencing scheduled for September 11.

Woman banned from keeping animals for five years after dog and fish suffered
Deborah Oakley of Ruardean pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a dog and three fish and failing to meet the needs of animals in her care. A council and police warrant found poor hygiene, waste and animals living in neglectful conditions, leading to the removal of a dog, cats, fish and a bird. Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court sentenced Oakley to a 12-week prison term suspended for 24 months, banned her from keeping animals for five years, issued a deprivation order for fish in foster care, and ordered her to pay £500 in prosecution costs and a £154 surcharge. A second defendant has also admitted animal-welfare offences and is due to be sentenced next month.

Police called to solar eclipse chaos as crowds rush for free protective glasses
Police were called to Sea Walls in Bristol to manage large and unruly crowds seeking complimentary solar eclipse glasses distributed by We The Curious. Thousands gathered for the partial eclipse, during which at least 90% of the Sun was expected to be obscured, while parking congestion and disorder were reported after supplies ran out. Experts warned that only ISO 12312-2-certified eclipse glasses are safe, as ordinary sunglasses cannot prevent serious and potentially irreversible eye damage. The Royal Greenwich Observatory also reported selling about 15,000 pairs of glasses ahead of the event.
