Derry Halloween Parade Dispute: Artists Warn Decade of Work at Risk
Derry carnival artists say a decade of creative work and their livelihoods are at risk following a breakdown with the North West Carnival Initiative over employment rights, workplace conditions and intellectual property. They claim unpaid work, safety concerns, removal from their workshop and unemployment led to financial distress and mental exhaustion. More than 10 artists revoked permission for use of their intellectual property in February 2026, while an employment claim was lodged with the Northern Ireland Employment Tribunal in August 2025. NWCI entered administration in May, and Derry City and Strabane District Council has arranged alternative plans for the 40th-anniversary Halloween celebrations, saying the event will remain locally rooted and support the wider creative sector.

Its activities are designed to help people—particularly those attending alone, living sober, newly arrived or affected by isolation—build confidence and friendships. Council blames Ulster University expansion uncertainty over Derry’s £45m riverfront regeneration blow
A £45m regeneration plan for Derry’s riverfront has been delayed due to uncertainty surrounding Ulster University’s planned School of Medicine expansion.
