Delhi introduces new EV targets to curb air pollution. But some motorists aren’t on board
Delhi’s new electric-vehicle policy aims to make most newly registered vehicles electric by 2027, beginning with three-wheelers and small trucks and followed by two-wheelers. Subsidies, tax waivers and incentives to scrap gasoline vehicles are intended to accelerate adoption, but only about 5% of Delhi’s registered vehicles are currently electric. Experts say electrification could reduce severe transport-related pollution, while warning that existing combustion vehicles will remain on the roads for years. Motorists remain concerned about inadequate charging facilities, battery range, vehicle durability and flooding, and the policy’s success will depend on major investments in charging networks, grid capacity, renewable power and public transport.
