Whitehaven Weekender to Bring Spectacle to Cumbrian Coast

Construction of New Business Campus in Cleator Moor Underway
Construction has begun on Units 9 and 12 of the iSH Enterprise Campus at the Leconfield Industrial Estate in Cleator Moor. Led by Cumberland Council as part of a wider West Cumbria regeneration programme, the campus aims to attract and support businesses in robotics, manufacturing and digital technology, with the new units expected to be available from late 2027. The project is supported by Town Deal and Levelling Up funding, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and Sellafield Ltd. Designed for flexible use, the buildings will include loading and storage areas, parking, photovoltaic panels, heat pumps and electric-vehicle charging points, with an intended EPC rating of A. Cumbria Businesses Under Pressure from Rising Inflation
Rising inflation, including a 2.9% CPI increase and higher energy bills, is placing additional pressure on Cumbria businesses. Suzanne Caldwell of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce said businesses are facing a cost-of-doing-business crisis, while British Chambers of Commerce survey data showed that 66% of firms cited inflation as a concern in the second quarter. North Lakeland Dental in Wigton wins national award

Author aims to give every Cumbrian pupil her latest book
Cumbrian author Helen Haraldsen is seeking approximately £2,000 in additional sponsorship to donate copies of her book, Fell Pony Tales to Treasure, to every primary and secondary school in Cumbria. The book uses narrative poems about real Fell ponies and their connections to local people and history to introduce children to the county's heritage. Haraldsen has worked with about 20 schools, created a free cross-curricular teaching resource, and received illustrations from Whitehaven artist Chloe Pennington. Twenty-five percent of the required funding has been raised, with further support sought from individuals, businesses, organisations and Fell pony breeders before the book goes to print at the end of September.

Cumbrian duo set to compete at world sheepdog trials
Cumbrian sheepdog handler Katy Cropper will compete with her seven-year-old Border Collie, Jacobsdale Gin, at the 2026 World Sheepdog Trial near Lauder in the Scottish Borders. Mark Macarte, treasurer of SSAFA’s Cumbria branch, has received the Sir James Gildea Global Volunteer Award for nearly 23 years of service and decades of support for the Armed Forces community. The former Royal Navy navigator and RAF serviceman began volunteering with SSAFA in 1988 and became the branch treasurer in 2003. Mountain biker raises over £2,600 for Lake District charity
Mountain biker Josh Day raised more than £2,600 for the Lake District Calvert Trust while attempting an Everesting challenge on Skiddaw. Next stage of Cleator Moor Town Deal project set to begin
The £4.2 million Revitalised Town project in Cleator Moor is moving into construction, with Story Contracting appointed as principal contractor. Managed by Cumberland Council and backed by the wider £22.5 million Cleator Moor Town Deal, the scheme will refurbish the library and former credit union building into a public services and community hub, improve the Town Square, and install new CCTV cameras. Local author's debut novel to be published this autumn
West Cumbria-based therapist Rezwana Robson is preparing to publish her debut memoir, The Girl Who Broke the Code, this autumn. The book draws on her experiences as a foster child, decades of therapeutic practice and reflections on identity, unspoken trauma and consciousness, including a visit to the former slave fortress at Elmina Castle in Ghana.
