Have-a-go heroes jump into action as stranger stabs woman with broken bottle in Headingley attack
Ibrahim Albashir admitted attempting to murder a woman on Otley Road in Headingley in March 2024, repeatedly stabbing toward her neck and chest with a broken bottle. Witnesses from outside The Original Oak intervened, punching and restraining him while others gave the victim first aid. The woman suffered injuries and lasting psychological trauma, including anxiety, avoidance of the attack location and a visible chest scar. Expert evidence found that Albashir has catatonic schizophrenia and was previously deemed unfit to plead, though his condition later improved. Leeds Crown Court sentenced him to 25 years under the Mental Health Act, with detention in hospital for as long as necessary and any remaining sentence to be served in custody.
