'I had to save the kids' - John Henry Sayers cleared of attacking arsonist who hit his home
A jury at the Old Bailey cleared John Henry Sayers and his son of grievous bodily harm after they confronted William Patterson, who had driven a burning vehicle into their Newcastle home with Sayers' daughter inside. Sayers described acting instinctively to protect his children and expressed relief at returning home after 18 months on remand in high‑security prisons. The family had previously faced repeated attacks linked to the Freeman organised crime group, and police had issued multiple life‑threat warnings to Sayers. Patterson later pleaded guilty to arson and was jailed. The father and son now aim to rebuild their lives and businesses in Newcastle.
