Andy Burnham considering national railcard expansion as thousands of students set to save 50 per cent from August 17
Andy Burnham is considering extending railcard discounts beyond existing eligibility groups and the South East. From August 17, the 16-17 Saver Railcard will allow young people to retain a 50% rail fare discount until the day before their 19th birthday. Government discussions about other railcard extensions are at an early stage, while IPPR North and the New Economics Foundation support making the Network Railcard available nationwide. The proposal could save consumers an estimated £425 million, with an expected net cost of £270 million in its first year falling to £120 million over the long term. Burnham has also described high rail fares as a priority alongside other cost-of-living measures.
