Brits should 'start counting' if they spot pretty butterfly
Painted lady butterfly numbers in the UK are reportedly at a once-in-a-decade high, following migration from Africa and continental Europe. Butterfly Conservation is urging the public to participate in the Big Butterfly Count by recording butterflies seen during 15-minute outdoor sessions, with the survey running until August 9. Sightings have been reported across the UK, and 2026 could become one of the species’ strongest seasons.
