Will Positive Signals Raise the Prospect of Direct Damascus-Hezbollah Talks?
Direct talks between Syria’s new leadership and Hezbollah remain unlikely despite public signals that both sides are open to dialogue. Damascus insists that any engagement proceed through official Lebanese channels and says its priorities would include stopping weapons and drug smuggling, dismantling Hezbollah-linked networks and addressing weapons depots inside Syria. Hezbollah is concerned about possible Syrian intervention under US and Arab pressure, while its control of a key overland supply route makes it unlikely to surrender its border influence easily. Analysts say tighter border controls, declining supplies and increased Syrian leverage could nevertheless push Hezbollah toward a temporary accommodation involving recognition of Lebanese state authority, limits on weapons and a stronger role for the Lebanese army.
