Train driver Shaun Burton suffered 'traumatic brainstem injuries' in Bedfordshire crash
A train driven by Shaun Burton collided with a stationary East Midlands Railway service near Bedford after passing a red signal, resulting in his fatal brainstem and chest injuries and leaving 162 passengers hurt. Evidence from CCTV and data recordings showed the brakes were applied shortly before impact, reducing the train’s speed from 77mph to 49mph. Investigators reported that the stationary train had stopped due to an AWS fault that triggered its brakes and set the following signal to red. An inquest has been opened and adjourned pending the outcomes of investigations by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch and British Transport Police.
