How farmers could fix Wales' polluted rivers and save money
Researchers found that excessive phosphorus from fertiliser and animal feed is the primary cause of pollution in the eastern and western Cleddau rivers. Farms in Pembrokeshire generate a large phosphorus surplus, yet existing manure could meet crop needs without additional fertiliser, offering savings of more than £1m a year. Dairy cooperative First Milk is working with farmers to calculate nutrient footprints and adjust practices using field‑level risk mapping to limit runoff. The findings were presented at the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, with officials and MPs noting the potential for national adoption. The Welsh government said actions across all sectors are needed to restore river health.
