Councils fear planning overhaul to boost housebuilding will weaken local voices
The UK Government has proposed planning changes intended to accelerate housebuilding in England, including default approval for homes within a reasonable walking distance of well-connected railway stations. The County Councils Network warns that the revised National Planning Policy Framework could override local plans, weaken community influence, shift power toward developers and promote unsustainable development, particularly in rural areas. Housing Secretary Angela Rayner argues that mandatory local plans, brownfield-first development and green-belt protections will preserve local input while delivering homes and infrastructure more quickly. The Government is slightly more than a quarter of the way toward its target of 1.5 million homes in five years, while Housing Minister Matthew Pennycook cited the Iran conflict as contributing to weaker demand and higher construction costs.

‘Apocalyptic scenes’ as huge fires begin tearing through homes in West Midlands

Fire services faced extreme demand, with emergency crews, police and ambulances responding across the region. Local councillor Andrew Tromans said the fires demonstrated the need for stronger action to protect communities from climate-change impacts.
