A fire broke out at the historic John Bull Chop House in Wigan town centre at about 4am on August 4, 2026. Four fire engines attended, firefighters extinguished the blaze using breathing apparatus and hose equipment, and no injuries were reported. Wigan Council established a 50-metre exclusion zone, later saying the fire was extinguished and the cordon would soon be lifted. The pub’s owner, Thwaites, said the cause remained unconfirmed and pledged to support tenants Pete and Vicky and restore the Grade II-listed venue. A neighboring bar said the fire did not spread to its premises and appeared confined to one end of the pub.

A young child’s grave in the baby garden at Westwood Cemetery in Ince, Wigan, was vandalised, with its marble surround damaged and ornaments discarded. Greater Manchester Police said the incident caused great distress to the family and believes it occurred between April 4 and July 25, 2026. Officers are investigating and have appealed for witnesses, CCTV footage and information.
