Volvo EX60 review: New electric SUV is quiet, quick and has one of the best stereos I’ve ever heard
The Volvo EX60 is presented as a highly capable premium electric family SUV and a significant model for Volvo. Available in P6, P10 AWD and later P12 AWD forms, it offers claimed ranges of up to 380, 410 and 503 miles respectively, with rapid charging of up to 370kW. The review praises its quiet and comfortable ride, strong performance, spacious interior, safety technology, Google-based infotainment and excellent practicality. Its Bowers & Wilkins Dolby Atmos audio system is considered an exceptional highlight. Minor drawbacks include some cheap-feeling interior plastics, limited physical controls and reliance on mobile connectivity for certain features. The P6 is identified as the sensible choice, while the P10 AWD is the likely sweet spot; overall, the EX60 receives a 10/10 rating and is recommended as one of the strongest premium electric SUVs available.

Lepas L8 plug-in hybrid review: It’s properly posh without the price tag
The Lepas L8 is a new five-seat plug-in hybrid SUV from Chery Group, priced from £34,900 in the UK and tested in £38,400 Elevate specification. A ten-day evaluation found it exceptionally well equipped, spacious, attractive and convincingly premium for the money, with a claimed 56-mile electric range, 745-mile total range and useful charging and vehicle-to-load features. Its main weaknesses are overly light steering, intrusive lane-centering assistance, noticeable road noise, a somewhat unsettled ride over larger bumps, firm seats and inconsistent interior plastics. Over-the-air software updates could address some of the driving-assistance and steering concerns, leaving the L8 as a strong-value plug-in hybrid that narrowly misses a higher rating.

Genesis GV70 review – I’m not alone in raving about this electric SUV
The Genesis GV70 Electrified is presented as a highly luxurious electric SUV that combines understated styling, a quiet and comfortable cabin, strong four-wheel-drive performance and rapid charging. Steve Fowler is particularly impressed by its ride-and-handling balance, efficiency and premium ownership experience, while contributor Simon Best and his family praise its comfort, technology and ease of charging after switching from a Kia Sportage. Drawbacks include a relatively modest 287-mile claimed range for a nearly £80,000 vehicle, confusingly similar rotary controls and disappointing Bang & Olufsen audio. The review concludes that Genesis is delivering a more genuinely luxurious experience than many established premium brands, though its position within Hyundai’s increasingly upmarket electric-car lineup remains an open question.

Mercedes-Benz G580 Review: I Lived with the £155k Electric G-Wagen for Ten Days
The Mercedes-Benz G580 electric G-Class retains the iconic model’s boxy design, ladder-frame construction and serious off-road hardware while adding four individually controlled motors, a 116–117kWh battery and 579bhp. Its claimed 291-mile range proved realistic during ten days of mixed driving, and rapid charging can take the battery from 10 to 80 per cent in about 29 minutes. Despite its size and weight, the G580 is relatively easy to manoeuvre in towns thanks to its visibility and squared-off shape. The review praises its performance, luxury cabin, technology and off-road capability, but criticises its £154,870 price, high energy consumption, occasionally poor ride, heavy doors and distracting steering-wheel controls. It is judged an appealing but highly niche electric SUV.

Government could slash EV sales targets as ZEV mandate comes under review
The UK government is consulting on whether to reduce the 2030 Zero Emission Vehicle mandate for new cars from 80% to 70%, 60% or 50%, or retain the target while giving manufacturers more flexibility. It says the 2030 phase-out of new petrol and diesel car sales and the requirement for all new cars and vans to be zero emission by 2035 remain unchanged. Automakers and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders welcome a review, citing difficult market conditions and the need to protect jobs, investment and consumer choice. Charging companies and EV businesses oppose weakening the rules, arguing that the mandate has driven sales and infrastructure investment and that policy uncertainty could deter private capital. The consultation also examines incentives for EV purchases and the treatment of plug-in hybrids, with responses due by 23 October.

From Zero to 100,000 in Under Two Years – Chinese EV Brand Hits UK Sales Milestone
Chinese automotive brands Omoda and Jaecoo have surpassed 100,000 vehicle registrations in the UK less than two years after launching, giving them almost 5.7% of the new-car market. The Jaecoo 7 accounts for more than 53,000 sales and has become one of Britain’s 10 best-selling cars, while the Omoda 5 has added over 36,500. Although the milestone includes petrol, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, electrified models have driven much of the growth. Backed by Chery, the brands have invested in more than 144 UK retail locations, parts hubs, aftersales support and warranties, with further models and network expansion planned for 2026 and 2027.

Most Brits back Labour’s electric car transition according to new poll
A YouGov poll commissioned by ChargeUK finds that 53% of people in Britain either support the current pace of the shift to electric vehicles or want it accelerated, while 37% favour slowing it down. Support for maintaining or speeding up the transition is especially strong among Labour and Green voters and younger people. The findings come as the government faces pressure from car manufacturers and the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders to reform the 33% ZEV mandate. ChargeUK, Octopus Electric Vehicles and Labour MP Perran Moon argue that weakening the mandate could undermine charging investment, supply-chain development and progress toward ending new petrol and diesel car sales, while the industry warns that the existing rules could damage competitiveness and employment.

‘Did they get ChatGPT to name them?’ These new car brands have one big problem
Steve Fowler argues that emerging car brands, particularly Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturers entering the UK, face a major branding problem: awkward or artificial names may discourage consumers from buying otherwise appealing cars. Young car owners and potential buyers criticize names such as Lepas, Leapmotor, Omoda, Denza and iCaur, while favoring familiar names, initials and revived heritage brands such as Mercedes-Benz, MG and Tesla. The discussion suggests that brand naming can materially influence consumer confidence and sales.

Lucid Gravity EV review after driving 1,100 miles across America
A ten-day, 1,100-mile drive through California and Nevada found the Lucid Gravity Grand Touring to be a highly capable luxury electric SUV. It combined seven-seat practicality, strong comfort, 828bhp performance, more than 3 miles per kWh in extreme heat, over 320 miles of real-world range and charging speeds of up to 360kW. The cabin, technology, air conditioning, handling and ride quality performed well, although wireless phone charging was inconsistent, hands-free DreamDrive operation was limited to some freeways and the powered tailgate required care. Starting at $94,900 in the United States, the Gravity offers impressive capability but is not available in the UK because Lucid does not currently produce a right-hand-drive version.

More Ferrari than Porsche: Alpine boss aims high with new electric range
Alpine CEO Philippe Krief says the French performance-car brand aims to remain a niche, exclusive and profitable electric-vehicle manufacturer, with Ferrari-like volumes rather than Porsche-scale production. The company is expanding with the A290 and A390, plans an all-electric successor to the A110—including 2+2 and convertible versions—and is considering additional models, including a large SUV. Alpine will enter Canada before the United States while it develops a suitable SUV platform. Krief says the new A110 will prioritize lightness, track performance, an intuitive driver-focused cockpit, extensive personalization and a distinctive electric sound, while Gucci tie-ins are intended to broaden Alpine’s appeal, particularly among women.

Jeep Compass Electric review – I drove the family SUV that’s ready for adventure
The Jeep Compass Electric is a distinctive, rugged-looking family SUV that stands apart from more conventional electric crossovers. Its spacious cabin, 550-litre boot, durable materials, useful rough-road capability and well-equipped technology package are strong points. However, the front-wheel-drive First Edition is expensive, its real-world range falls short of official claims, the ride on 20-inch wheels is uneven, motorway wind noise is noticeable, and touchscreen climate controls are inconvenient. With an 8/10 rating, it is recommended for buyers seeking Jeep character and practicality rather than the best comfort, efficiency or value in the class.

The UK has almost 50 Chinese electric car models – these are the 10 most exciting
China-built cars now span nearly every part of the UK electrified-car market, from affordable superminis and plug-in hybrids to luxury vehicles and high-performance models. The Tesla Model 3 ranks first, followed by the BYD Dolphin G DM-i, Mini Aceman and Volvo ES90, while BYD dominates the remaining top ten. The strongest vehicles increasingly compete with cars built anywhere in the world, although recurring shortcomings include firm suspension, screen-heavy controls, intrusive driver warnings and charging or range figures that can lag behind claims. Western brands remain prominent among the best-ranked cars, but Chinese-owned manufacturers are rapidly closing the gap.

Most big company fleets didn’t buy a single new petrol or diesel car last year
More than 70% of major corporate fleets surveyed by Climate Group did not add a new petrol or diesel vehicle in the previous year, suggesting electric vehicles are becoming the default for large businesses. One in five EV100 members has electrified over half its fleet, while AstraZeneca has converted more than 80% of its 22,000-plus vehicles to electric power across 37 markets. Companies are adopting EVs for lower operating and maintenance costs, emissions reductions, protection from fuel-price changes and preparation for tighter regulations. EV100 members have avoided nearly three million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, installed more than 48,500 charging units at 6,000 locations, and deployed almost 24,000 EVs in emerging markets during the past year. Charging infrastructure and suitable vehicle availability remain challenges, particularly in Latin America, Africa and Asia, but large corporate orders are helping create demand and encourage investment.

Meet the Chinese and American brands targeting Audi, BMW and Mercedes buyers
Chinese and American manufacturers are rapidly entering Britain’s premium electric-car market with brands such as Zeekr, Denza, Lucid, Cadillac and Rivian. Their increasingly polished, well-equipped vehicles could pressure established German leaders Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, although those companies retain major advantages in brand recognition, dealer networks, scale and customer loyalty. The greatest risk may fall on weaker brands positioned below the German trio, while buyers could ultimately benefit from greater competition, lower prices and faster development. New entrants still face substantial challenges in building profitable businesses with reliable servicing, parts supply and strong resale values.

How building electric cars are forcing rival brands to become partners
Automakers are increasingly forming partnerships to offset the high costs of developing electric vehicles, leading to complex cross‑brand and cross‑border collaborations. Stellantis is expanding ties with JLR, Chinese manufacturers and technology companies while restructuring its brand hierarchy to streamline investment. Other major carmakers, including Ford, Renault, Toyota and Volkswagen, are also sharing platforms and technology to reduce development time and expense.
