Steve Ladner

A cat named Tosca lived for a decade in the tunnels beneath Dover Castle after arriving in 1948 as a mouser. Castle staff and workers from the General Post Office kept him well fed, and he became known for stealing food and avoiding seagulls that frightened him. The tunnels, historically used for communications and dating back centuries, served as his home until 1958, after which a worker adopted him. Tosca lived to age 17 and remains remembered through photographs and stories preserved by English Heritage.
