“Too small” flats planned for empty Redcar store refused
Plans to convert the upper floors of the long-vacant former Uptons department store on Redcar High Street into eight apartments have been refused by Redcar and Cleveland Council. The application failed to meet national minimum space standards, including a proposed two-bedroom flat that was 5 sq m below the recommended size. The council also raised concerns about inadequate natural light, with four flats lacking bedroom windows because of the adjoining Livery public house.

Improvement plans to Redcar's 'gateway' back on the table
Redcar and Cleveland Council has revived plans to improve Station Road after the project was previously dropped because of rising costs. The proposed scheme would include new paving, seating, tree planting, wider pavements and space for outdoor café seating. The Tees Valley Combined Authority has provisionally approved £110,000 to develop a business case for seeking up to £4.5m in additional funding. Southern Green has received a 12-month contract to continue design work, with construction expected to begin in spring 2027 if funding and planning approval are secured.

Saltburn Valley Gardens subject to five-year management plan
Saltburn’s Grade II listed Valley Gardens, which are on Historic England’s At Risk Register, will be managed under a new five-year plan. The strategy aims to improve biodiversity and wildlife habitats, preserve historic features, and increase community engagement. It responds to concerns about path erosion, overgrown vegetation, deteriorating features, restricted access and declining heritage value, although the council acknowledges that limited funding remains a major challenge. Progress will be monitored annually and the plan formally reviewed every five years.
