Ex-Labour MP Joan Walley says Burnham brings different perspective
Former Stoke-on-Trent MP Joan Walley voiced support for Andy Burnham’s leadership ambitions, citing his experience in northern constituencies and his focus on spreading economic growth across the UK. She praised his teamwork and urgency, recalling their collaboration on a coal mining review. Burnham’s proposals on devolution drew criticism from Conservative Party chair Kevin Hollinrake, who argued they failed to address key national issues, while Scottish First Minister John Swinney questioned Burnham’s understanding of Scotland. Walley said Keir Starmer acted appropriately by stepping down and urged the media to give Burnham a fair opportunity if he becomes prime minister.
