Record myxomatosis outbreak hits Guernsey rabbits
A severe outbreak of myxomatosis in Guernsey has affected more than 500 wild rabbits, surpassing previous records. The GSPCA and local vets report high case numbers driven by warm weather and abundant rabbit populations, with infected animals often found too weak to move. The disease has no cure, and residents are urged to safely capture sick rabbits for veterinary care and dispose of dead rabbits to limit spread. Vets warn domestic rabbits are also at risk through fleas and biting insects, urging owners to vaccinate and take preventive measures.
