Wickford: Derailed train moved but disruption continues
A Greater Anglia train that derailed in Wickford, Essex, has been removed, but the line remains closed between Billericay and Hockley for about a week while engineers repair damaged track, signalling equipment and overhead electrical infrastructure. Limited shuttle trains and replacement buses are operating, but passengers report substantially longer journeys and confusion over the bus arrangements. Greater Anglia has advised passengers to use alternative routes, plan ahead and consider travelling via Rochford, while tickets are being accepted on c2c services despite expected delays.

Nesting boxes for swifts to be unveiled at church in Maldon
Twelve purpose-built nesting boxes made by local volunteers will be unveiled at St Peter’s Church in Maldon, Essex, to provide new nesting sites for swifts. The initiative, led by Maldon Town Council with support from the Essex Swift Recovery Project, responds to a more than 70% decline in Britain’s swift population since 1990 as older buildings are renovated and traditional nesting spaces disappear. Conservationist John Le Seve said Maldon’s population remains relatively healthy because of its older buildings and suitable feeding grounds, and hopes the boxes will eventually attract large numbers of nesting birds.

New parking fees introduced for Colchester United match days
Match-day parking charges of up to £16.50 are being introduced at Colchester Leisure Park from 8 August 2026, applying from four hours before events at the JobServe Community Stadium until two hours after they finish. The North Essex Parking Partnership, led by Colchester City Council, has taken over car-park management and added red-route restrictions on parts of United Way. Customers of venues such as Vue and Hollywood Bowl can retain free parking by validating their stay, while customers of Greggs and Wendy’s can park free for up to 90 minutes. The changes are intended to improve access and traffic safety during football matches and other major events.

Children sign up to sea safety lessons on the Essex coast
A sea-safety project run by Tendring District Council has attracted 422 children in Clacton, more than 100 above the previous year. The Swim Safe sessions teach children and families about tides, currents, wind, survival tactics, how to seek help and other coastal dangers. Increased participation follows four deaths on the Essex coast this summer, including three family members at West Mersea and a man at Frinton-on-Sea. Parents and organizers stressed that swimming in open water differs significantly from swimming in a pool and urged both residents and holidaymakers to take part.

How are people adapting to the East of England hosepipe ban?
Residents across the East of England are adjusting to new hosepipe restrictions introduced by regional water suppliers following heatwaves and low rainfall. Households are adopting measures such as reusing water, hand-watering gardens and reducing outdoor water use, while nurseries and gardeners use the ban to encourage sustainability practices. Public splash parks remain open due to separate usage categories and recirculating systems. Water companies report early reductions in demand but warn that consumption remains at record levels, urging continued conservation efforts.

Essex mental health inquiry: My daughter was lost in system
A public inquiry into Essex mental health services heard that 26‑year‑old Abbigail Smith, who died by suicide in 2022, was repeatedly moved between units and had her autism repeatedly dismissed, contributing to systemic failures in her care. Her mother, Lisa Wolff, testified that staff ignored clinical diagnoses and that Abbigail faced neglect, including inadequate risk planning before discharge. Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust apologised, while inquiry leaders and trust officials stated their commitment to ongoing improvements and cooperation with the investigation.

NHS trust to spend £30m on Lampard mental health care inquiry
The NHS trust at the centre of the Lampard Inquiry expects to spend £30m on the process examining more than 2,000 deaths under Essex mental health services. Former EPUT chief Paul Scott acknowledged underestimated workloads, missed document deadlines and the destruction of asbestos‑contaminated records, while affirming his accountability. Inquiry leaders noted national implications as similar systemic failings emerge elsewhere and expressed concern over the inability to confirm the total number of deaths. The inquiry has issued extensive evidence requests, including compelled disclosures, and will begin hearing from NHS mental health staff. Interim recommendations may come later in the year, with final findings expected in 2028.

How photography helps Essex carer cope with wife’s cancer
A wildlife photography hobby adopted by Alan Bruce from Essex has helped him cope with caring full-time for his wife Denise, who has stage‑four breast cancer. Encouraged by a cancer charity, Bruce now exhibits his work at Fingringhoe Wick Nature Discovery Park, where he says the creative focus improves his mental health and offers perspective. Denise, who was diagnosed with metastatic cancer in 2021, supports his photography and joins him when able. The exhibition, supported by Essex Wildlife Trust, also includes Denise’s handmade crocheted insects and aims to promote appreciation of local nature.
