PC Harper petition - thousands call for killers to stay in jail
A petition launched by Aileen O'Connor of the Thames Valley Police Federation gathered more than 30,000 signatures within nine hours, calling for Jessie Cole and Albert Bowers to remain in prison. The pair were sentenced to 13 years for their involvement in the 2019 killing of PC Andrew Harper, while driver Henry Long received 16 years. Under an early-release scheme intended to ease prison overcrowding, Cole and Bowers may serve only half their sentences because the scheme excludes some serious sexual offences but not their convictions. Police representatives, PC Harper's family, the Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner, and MP Olivia Bailey criticized the government's decision, saying it undervalues the risks faced by police officers and causes further distress to Harper's family.
