Ipswich Town - Why Sir Alf Ramsey Stands Alone in English Football
Sir Alf Ramsey is portrayed as unmatched among England managers because he remains the only coach to win the men’s World Cup, leading England to victory in 1966. His earlier success at Ipswich Town, including the 1962 league title and innovative use of wingers in midfield, is presented as evidence of his tactical genius. Despite a reserved public persona, Ramsey was deeply admired by his players and selected cohesive teams rather than simply the most individually talented players. His later dismissal after England failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup and criticism of his defensive approach do not diminish his enduring legacy at Ipswich and with England.
