Serial conwoman, 38, pretended to be 12-year-old girl to dupe families into adopting her
Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, 38, was sentenced in Joinville, Brazil, to one year, 10 months and 28 days in prison for fraud and using a false identity after posing as a vulnerable child and living with a family for 14 months. She allegedly claimed to be abused, autistic and as young as 11 or 12, reinforcing the deception through childish behaviour, toys, pacifiers and drawings. A relative uncovered reports of similar alleged deceptions across several Brazilian states, leading to her arrest. The court relied on phone evidence, witness statements and her admission of using false personal details. Her defence argued that the identities were a survival strategy and plans to appeal the conviction.

Long Lost Medieval Monastery Found Underneath Football Pitch in Denmark
Archaeologists have used ground-penetrating radar to locate remarkably well-preserved remains of St Clare’s Monastery about a metre beneath a sports field in Roskilde, Denmark. The 13th-century convent, founded in 1256, was demolished after the Reformation and its bricks were reused at Selsø Castle, leading historians to believe little remained. Radar scans revealed rooms, cloisters, a church and especially well-preserved eastern-wing structures. Further excavations and investigations will depend on a decision by Roskilde Municipality.

Paramedic told stroke patient 'stop being a baby' and accused her of lying
Paramedic Rachel Claire Lemonofides was struck off the Health and Care Professions Council register after a tribunal found that she belittled and verbally abused a woman suffering a stroke, refused to believe she could not walk, and failed to recognise signs of a life-threatening brain bleed and abdominal aortic aneurysm. The patient was forced to crawl downstairs, later underwent emergency surgery and spent 10 days in a coma. The tribunal also found that Lemonofides’ comments about “black magic” and possession were racially discriminatory and racially motivated. Lemonofides admitted unprofessional conduct and failing to assess the seriousness of the condition but denied racial motivation and another allegation. The panel concluded that the misconduct was serious, showed a high risk of repetition and was incompatible with continued registration.

Voice 'heard counting down' before boy, 5, plunged to his death from 15th floor
Five-year-old Aalim Ahmed died instantly after falling from a kitchen window of his family’s 15th-floor flat in Plaistow on May 16, 2024. An inquest heard CCTV audio in which a child appeared to count down “three, two, one” before a loud clang, followed by another child shouting Aalim’s name. Investigators found no evidence that he was forced from the flat and said he most likely climbed or jumped out on his own, while the coroner noted that his age and autism may have meant he could not understand the danger. Aalim’s parents say his death was preventable and accuse Newham Council of failing to fix faulty window restrictors despite repeated safety complaints. The council disputes aspects of the family’s account, and the hearing is continuing.
