Ryan Madden, 37, pleaded guilty at Cardiff Crown Court to attempting to murder his sleeping flatmate in Cwmbran after a trivial argument. The victim suffered 14 stab wounds but survived, and Madden later admitted the attack to friends before being arrested. The court heard that Madden had extensive previous convictions and a history of substance and alcohol abuse. Judge Paul Hobson called the attack disturbing and extreme, sentencing Madden to 17 years—12 years in custody followed by five years on extended licence—with parole eligibility after a minimum of eight years.
