Ricky Gervais’s harshest critics increasingly include longtime fans who admired The Office and Extras but now regard his work as repetitive, provocatively taboo-focused and creatively diminished. The article argues that Alley Cats, his poorly reviewed new show, exposes the divide between his earlier comedy audience and a newer fan base attracted to swearing, animal-rights advocacy and defiance of perceived political correctness. It traces the shift through projects such as Derek, Life on the Road and After Life, as well as Gervais’s Golden Globes appearances and increasingly confrontational material about trans people. Although his upcoming Legend tour may attempt more personal material, Alley Cats is presented as the point at which mainstream comedy may have definitively moved on from him.
