Police thank public for saving Lillingstone Lovell stables
Local farmers and residents helped Thames Valley Police prevent a rapidly spreading field fire from reaching the force’s stables at Lillingstone Lovell near Milton Keynes. They used their own machinery to spray the fire and soak paddocks, while police prepared horses for a possible evacuation. Five Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue crews and a wildfire unit attended, bringing the blaze under control before it reached the stables.

‘Mammal ledges’ built beneath new A421 dual carriageway
Raised mammal ledges have been installed in drainage culverts beneath the new A421 dual carriageway between Bedfordshire’s Black Cat roundabout and Cambridgeshire’s Caxton Gibbet roundabout. National Highways says the dry pathways will allow hedgehogs, rabbits, mice, voles, badgers and other small mammals to cross safely while maintaining access to their habitats. The 10-mile road project aims to reduce congestion and shorten journey times for around 80,000 weekday drivers, and is scheduled to open in spring 2027.

Golf club in Welwyn Garden City objects to being built over
Panshanger Golf Club has objected to Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council's proposal to replace the 50-year-old public course with 500 homes and a leisure centre including a swimming pool. The club says the course serves hundreds of members and thousands of regular users, hosts more than 30,000 rounds annually, and provides important physical, social and environmental benefits. It argues that construction on green belt land could harm local ecology, infrastructure and ground stability. The council says no decision has been made and is consulting residents, while arguing that family homes could help finance the scheme.

Hospital staff in Bedfordshire strike in row about overtime
Operating theatre staff at Bedford Hospital and Luton and Dunstable University Hospital are striking over the reduction of overtime pay from time‑and‑a‑half to a flat rate, a change introduced earlier in the year following consultation. Unison argues the cut leaves staff more than £100 worse off per shift and risks worsening staff shortages. Over 100 operations were previously cancelled during walkouts in June. The Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust defends the changes as ensuring fairness and alignment with national NHS policies but expresses concern about disruption to patient care. Emergency and urgent services continue to operate during the strike.

Chalfont St Peter Green belt land to sell for epilepsy research
Government approval allows the Epilepsy Society to sell green belt land in Chalfont St Peter for a housing development of 975 homes. The decision follows a public inquiry after Buckinghamshire Council did not rule on the charity’s proposal. The housing minister acknowledged landscape harm but concluded that the benefits, including homes, a school and a care facility, outweighed the drawbacks, noting the council’s inadequate housing supply. The charity expects about £93 million from the sale for new medical equipment and epilepsy research, while Buckinghamshire Council expressed disappointment and is reviewing the decision.

Cricket club in Milton Keynes has to quit league after vandalism
Westcroft Cricket Club withdrew from the Northamptonshire Cricket League after repeated vandalism damaged its pitch, including a major incident on 11 June that affected all playing surfaces. Despite earlier investments in ground improvements and security measures, further repairs are expected to exceed £15,000. Emergency fixes allowed limited play to resume, but substantial investment is still needed for league fixtures. Thames Valley Police said the case is currently filed due to insufficient evidence, but may be reopened if new information emerges. The club continues to emphasise its community role and determination to rebuild.
