Nigeria’s 2027 Elections: Six Changes Since the Last Vote
Nigeria’s 2027 elections will take place amid major changes since the disputed 2023 vote. A 2026 electoral law requires electronic transmission of polling-station results to the IReV portal while retaining manual transmission during network or system failures, a compromise that may improve transparency but could also weaken public trust. The ruling APC has expanded its control to 30 of Nigeria’s 36 states, raising concerns about one-party dominance. Security remains a central issue as kidnappings, insurgency and violent crime persist, contributing to food insecurity. Economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira, have intensified cost-of-living pressures despite a later decline in inflation. Electricity reforms and a $2.4 billion sector intervention have not yet eliminated frequent outages. Young people remain the decisive electoral bloc, accounting for most new registrations but historically voting at relatively low rates. The election’s outcome will matter beyond Nigeria because political or economic instability could affect security, migration, trade and investment across West Africa.
