Zimbabwe has seen a significant increase in the number of trained plastic and reconstructive surgeons, now totaling six, thanks to the efforts of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA). Health Minister Douglas Mombeshora highlighted the challenges faced prior to COSECSA's establishment, including limited resources and a shortage of qualified trainers. The initiative has led to a high retention rate of over 96% of COSECSA-trained surgeons in Zimbabwe, addressing surgical needs across the country. The regional collaboration fostered by COSECSA has strengthened member countries, enhancing the skills of surgical professionals. Health officials, including Josephine Ngirande and Allan Moyo, emphasized COSECSA's pivotal role in equipping surgeons to meet healthcare demands, particularly in rural and underserved areas.

Women bear brunt of HIV: Minister
Douglas Mombeshora, Zimbabwe's Health and Child Care Minister, highlighted the disproportionate impact of HIV on women during World Aids Day commemorations. Despite a general decline in new infections, women accounted for a significant majority of new cases, driven by gender inequalities and socio-economic vulnerabilities. The government, in collaboration with the National Aids Council and other partners, is implementing targeted interventions to address these issues, including promoting female condoms and educational programs. While Zimbabwe has made progress in reducing new infections and increasing antiretroviral therapy coverage, Mombeshora emphasized the need for strategic efforts to meet the 95-95-95 targets by 2025 and ultimately end AIDS by 2030.
Tongogara camp makes strides in HIV fight
Tongogara Refugee Camp is advancing in HIV prevention and management, with over 100 individuals on antiretroviral therapy. The camp provides comprehensive health services, including HIV interventions and maternal health care, supported by the Health and Child Care ministry and the National Aids Council. Initiatives like the sister-to-sister program aim to promote health-seeking behavior among young women, while similar programs for boys focus on HIV awareness and combating substance abuse.
