York Minster: Iconic Window at Risk of Cracking Due to Climate Change
York Minster’s Rose Window is at increasing risk from climate-related UV and infrared radiation, which are accelerating stone decay, damaging painted surfaces and weakening historic materials. A 2025 survey found renewed deterioration in the window, which already suffered around 40,000 cracks in the 1984 Minster fire. A £1.4 million fundraising appeal will support conservation of the medieval stonework and stained glass, including the installation of UV- and IR-resistant external glazing to shield the historic glass.
