Glasgow has 'saved and reinvented' Commonwealth Games format, claims chief exec
Glasgow’s 2026 Commonwealth Games chief executive Phil Batty says the scaled-back event rescued and reinvented the competition after Victoria, Australia withdrew over rising costs. Using 10 sports, existing venues and a privately funded £162.6 million model, the Games were delivered in 18 months at substantially lower projected cost than previous editions. Batty believes the format will encourage more nations to host, with future Games tailored to each location; Amdavad, India, is scheduled to host in 2030.
