Hottest Month on Record: The Summer of 2006 in Somerset
The July 2006 heatwave made that month one of the hottest on record in the United Kingdom, with Somerset temperatures reaching 35°C. Residents visited beaches, pools and parks, while local ice-cream and bottled-water businesses reported sharply higher sales. The heat had mixed effects, however: the Three Horseshoes pub said customers avoided the beer garden and waited until cooler evening temperatures before going out. The event is presented as an early example of increasingly frequent heatwaves linked to climate change.
