‘Rare and risky’: Birth of four identical quadruplets amazes medical experts
A 34-year-old Australian woman, Jenitar Na’amoana, gave birth by caesarean section at 28 weeks and four days to four naturally conceived identical quadruplet girls. Doctors at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital described the monozygotic pregnancy as exceptionally rare and highly risky, estimating that such births occur roughly once in 700,000 deliveries. The babies—Emily, Harriet, Catherine and Alexa—are healthy and receiving care in the neonatal intensive care unit until they are fully developed. The family, which already has four children, has launched a fundraiser to help purchase a vehicle large enough for all ten family members.
