An appeals chamber upheld Ratko Mladić’s life sentence for genocide at Srebrenica, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the Bosnian War. The court rejected his appeal concerning the ten offenses for which he was convicted, while maintaining his acquittals on genocide charges relating to other parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mladić’s defense had argued that he was wrongly held responsible for unplanned events and that soldiers acted independently. The ruling ended his decade-long case and was welcomed by Turkey’s Foreign Ministry as an important step toward justice, reconciliation and preventing similar crimes.
