A campaign group recorded 263 incidents of vehicles driving the wrong way through Ambleside’s one-way system over 12 months, although it believes the true figure is higher. Cumbria Police said the location could be subject to patrols if identified as a problem hotspot and urged drivers to follow signs and report incidents with photographic or video evidence. Westmorland and Furness Council has already updated some signs and road markings, while acknowledging that further improvements may be needed because many visitors are unfamiliar with the town’s layout.

Plans have been submitted to convert the Kendal building housing the Outside In soft play charity into seven flats, four ground-floor retail units and a car park. The charity, which nearly closed in 2025 and continues to rely on funding and community support, was informed by its landlord earlier in July and is considering its future. Planning permission could take several weeks or months, while the application argues that the site is highly accessible because it is near Kendal town centre and the railway station.
