Hampshire firefighters tackling Isle of Wight Headon Warren wildfire
Mainland firefighters from across Hampshire were sent by ferry to the Isle of Wight to support exhausted local crews battling a wildfire at Headon Warren. The blaze covered approximately 61 acres and extended across steep heathland near the cliff edge, requiring additional engines, water carriers, Land Rovers and command units. Around 60 firefighters were working overnight, rising to about 80 as relief crews arrived. Fire-service managers rotated crews and reassigned appliances to preserve emergency cover across the island, while ferry companies, the local council, the National Trust and Southern Water supported transport, access, water and communications.

Southampton charity sex offender dies in prison
Steven Browne, a convicted sex offender serving an indeterminate sentence for raping a severely disabled woman and sexually assaulting another, died on June 24 at HMP Isle of Wight. A Prisons and Probation Ombudsman investigation is underway. Browne had a long history of sexual offences and volunteered with a Southampton disability charity despite senior figures being aware of his past, leading to a 2008 Charity Commission finding of serious safeguarding failures. He remained imprisoned from his 2007 sentence until his death.

Brittany Ferries to close Portsmouth cross-Channel route
Brittany Ferries plans to close its Portsmouth–Le Havre route in October as part of cost‑driven restructuring influenced by post‑Covid debt, higher taxes and shifting passenger demand. Portsmouth will gain additional services, including a new daily sailing to Cherbourg replacing the Poole route and participation in a revised triangular link with Guernsey and Cherbourg. The company also expects to sell two vessels as it adapts to long‑term financial pressures and ongoing effects of Brexit.
