Why Women Journalists Are Leaving Newsrooms in Balochistan
Women journalists in Balochistan are leaving traditional newsrooms because of shrinking employment opportunities, low and delayed pay, harassment, safety risks, social restrictions, workplace pressure, and inadequate institutional support. Interviews with journalists describe layoffs, bureau closures, mental-health strain, and the financial obstacles women face when attempting to freelance. Digital journalism offers an alternative path for some, but experts argue that media organizations must provide safe workplaces, equal opportunities, mentorship, effective anti-harassment systems, timely salaries, trauma support, and career development. Without reform, Pakistan’s media industry risks losing experienced women journalists and the perspectives they bring to reporting on underserved communities.
