Tiny World Cup earthquakes in Norway

The European Correspondent 30 Jun 2026 English

Reporting style, Factual: Factual reporting on events and scientific observations

Researchers in Bergen observed small seismic signals created by nationwide celebrations after Norwegian goals during the World Cup. Norway’s first tournament appearance in 30 years has sparked widespread enthusiasm, amplified by a viral Viking-style chant that has drawn mixed reactions from neighboring countries. With a knockout match against the Ivory Coast approaching, scientists expect stronger seismic activity and plan to install additional monitoring equipment near public viewing areas.

Meet Norway, the quiet war profiteer

The European Correspondent 25 Jun 2026 English

Reporting style, Balanced: Mix of factual reporting and interpretation on Norway's energy strategy

Political context, Centre-left: Energy and climate policy discussed through a geopolitical and environmental lens

Norway is using Middle East instability to strengthen its position as Europe’s key gas supplier and promote Arctic oil and gas development as an energy‑security asset. With declining production expected in the 2030s and most undiscovered resources located in the Barents Sea, Oslo is advancing new exploration licenses despite EU calls for a ban on Arctic drilling. Environmental groups warn of severe ecological risks, but Norway’s Supreme Court has upheld continued exploration. Europe, heavily dependent on Norwegian gas and lacking alternatives, has limited leverage to challenge Oslo’s strategy.

Proposal to Name Some Streets in Turkish Divides Community in Norway

Euronews 4 Mar 2019 Turkish

In Drammen, Norway, home to a dense Turkish population, a proposal by Turkish residents to name some streets with Turkish names such as 'Mevlana Yolu' and 'Küçük Anadolu' has sparked nationwide debate, dividing public opinion. The Turkish association believes that the street name changes would contribute to better relations between the Turkish community and the locals, especially as the 50th anniversary of Turkish worker migration approaches. The proposal has faced harsh criticism from far-right groups and negative comments on websites like Rights.no and Document. Former Mayor Lise Christoffersen supports the proposal, emphasizing the positive contributions of immigrants. Priest Signe Myklebust also expressed a positive view of multiculturalism. The final decision on the street name changes will be made by the Drammen City Council.

The number of Turks seeking asylum in Norway surpasses Syrians

Euronews 22 Jan 2019 Turkish

Turkish citizens have become the largest group seeking asylum in Norway, surpassing Syrians, according to the latest annual asylum report by Norway's foreign police (UDI). In 2018, 3 out of every 10 asylum seekers in Norway were Turkish. The increase in Turkish applications has led UDI to announce a pause in June 2017 to carefully review the content of the files. Despite a general decrease in asylum applications in Norway, there has been a significant increase in applications from Turkish citizens, particularly following the July 15 coup attempt in Turkey. Of the completed applications, 91% resulted in a positive outcome, granting residency to the applicants. In 2018, 765 Turkish citizens applied for asylum, compared to 419 Syrians, 241 Eritreans, and 119 Iranians. The highest number of applications from Turkish citizens occurred in June.

Enough is enough — the children of Tromsdalen can’t wait any longer!

Nordnorsk debatt 25 Sep 2026 Norwegian

Reporting style, Opinionated: An explicitly opinionated debate piece urging politicians to prioritize and proceed with the new school.

Political context, Centre: Advocates for a local public-school project and criticizes political priorities, without expressing a broader ideological position.

Carina Johansen argues that the long-delayed replacement for Tromsdalen school must not be postponed again. The school was approved in 2017, but nearly a decade later construction has not begun; meanwhile, planned improvements were deferred, the school lost its environmental health approval, and a proposed SFO modular building was abandoned and removed. Although Tromsø Municipality faces serious financial problems, Johansen says the city has selected a site and made a commitment, and that children should not bear the consequences of repeated political delays. She calls on local politicians to prioritize the project and deliver the new school.

Crown Princess Victoria Was Given a Special Task: King Haakon Called Before the Funeral

SE og HØR 10 Sep 2026 Danish

Reporting style, Informative: Mostly factual reporting, with a few appreciative descriptions of Victoria’s gesture.

Crown Princess Victoria read the Prayer of St. Francis at King Harald’s funeral in Oslo after King Haakon personally asked her to do so. The prayer has longstanding ties to the Norwegian royal family: Victoria read it at Haakon and Mette-Marit’s wedding 25 years earlier, and Princess Ingrid Alexandra later read it at her confirmation. The Swedish Royal Court confirmed that the request came from Norway and said Victoria was glad to accept, noting that Harald was her godfather.

The municipality stopped a data center giant: – You are held a bit like a hostage

VG 25 Nov 2025 Norwegian

Reporting style, Balanced: Mix of factual reporting and political perspectives; contains subjective statements from stakeholders.

Political context, Centre: Article covers local political decision-making with mixed viewpoints but does not advocate a clear ideological position.

A proposed large-scale data center in Sandnes, owned by Israeli-backed Green Mountain, created intense political division, community opposition, and accusations of pressure and secrecy. Despite promises of up to 50 billion kroner in investments and at least 200 jobs, local politicians expressed concern over rushed decision-making, unclear information, and heavy lobbying as the project demanded energy usage surpassing that of all local households combined. The municipal council ultimately rejected the necessary plan change. Green Mountain acknowledged the process was rushed and pledged to improve future handling. With the agreement expiring at the end of the year and no new plans confirmed, local officials criticized that part-time politicians must independently assess complex proposals from major global tech actors.
