As the 2024 presidential election loomed, Native Americans were targeted by both Democratic and Republican candidates, groups who saw them as a pathway to victory in a state Joe Biden won by only 10,500 votes in the previous election. A group that long contributed to Democratic victories, the power of these voters was finally receiving national interest as loyalties shifted. But what were candidates doing to earn votes? We traversed the state of Arizona to speak to people across the political spectrum, and asking questions to those in power about their motivations for pursuing Native votes.
We spoke with then-VP nominee JD Vance in Peoria, Arizona in July 2024, days after he was selected to become President Donald Trump's running mate.
As quickly as ICE has spread its operations across the United States — with the historic support of the Trump Administration — groups of "ICE trackers" have quietly formed, discreetly following, monitoring, and sharing ICE activity in their communities. We exclusively embedded with one of these groups as they followed agents through Phoenix, Arizona in December 2025.
